Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favor!! Hey Fabian here! So, this week I read the Hunger Games series and saw the movie. I think that Jennifer Lawrence is an awesome actor. :) To me the first book in the series is the best book in the whole series. I liked the second book because I thought that the design for the game arena was brilliant! Suzanne Collins designed the arena in the second book as a clock! How smart is that? okay, now some history on the book!
So, basically the book is about a girl who lives in Panem. Panem is supposed to be the US in the future after the apocalypse. In Panem, there used to be 13 districts number 1-13 but now there are 12 because district 13 was destroyed when all of the districts rebelled against the government during the apocalypse. The government destroyed district 13 to show the other districts that that is going to happen to them if they disobey the government again. The twelve districts of Panem are District 1,the district of luxury;District 2,the district of masonry and later weapons;District 3,the district of technology; District 4;the district of fishing; District 5, the district of power and electricity; District 6, the district of transportation; District 7, the district of lumber; District 8, the district of textiles; District 9, the district of grain; District 10, the district of livestock; District 11, the district of agriculture, and our favorite, District 12, the district of mining. ly known as the Rocky Mountains. The capitol is run by President Snow. For entertainment for the people in the Capitol, each year the Capitol will host a game for all of Panem to see, a deadly game that is. So, basically the rules of the game are try to survive and not kill yourself. Each year the Capitol will choose one boy and one girl from each of the districts. There are 24 tributes in all. They will choose the tributes during the reaping. They will bring the tributes to the Capitol where they will train for 2 weeks to go into an outdoor arena to fight to the death and survive the game. The last person standing wins the game,which was an exception in the 74th Hunger because the last two people standing didn't want to kill each other and threatened to both do suicide at the same time. This was the Hunger Game that Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark participated in and won. Katniss Everdeen is the main character in the story. Katniss had to take care of her family ever since her father died in an explosion in the mines that he used to work in. Katniss takes care of her family by going into the woods near her district, hunting the animals in the woods, and by selling the game to people in her district. During the reaping, Katniss's sister Prim go chosen to participate but Katniss volunteers to take her place as the female tribute from District 12. Peeta Mellark was chosen to participate in the Hunger Games as District 12's male tribute.A delusional Katniss is saved by Peeta when she's unable to coordinate herself to run from Cato, who is quickly approaching. Haymitch becomes her mentor for the Hunger Games. Before she l
eft to go to the Hunger Games, her friend Madge Undersee comes in to say her final goodbye and gives her the Mockingjay pin for her tribute token. That Mockingjay pin played a very important part in the series. Haymitch is her mentor for the Hunger Games. When Katniss arrives at the Capitol she is prepared for the parade through the city streets by her prep team which consists of Octavia, Flavius, and Venia. There she meets her stylist Cinna who comes up with an idea that amazes all of Panem. That idea was to dress her up in a black unitard to represent coal and lights her and Peeta with synthetic fire that does not burn. During the private session ,which was used to show the judges your full skills, Katniss was angered at the Gamemakers for ignoring her and to get them to pay more attention she shot an apple in the roasted pig's mouth that they were paying more attention to. Because of her temper and attitude Katniss scores an 11. On the night before the games begin Katniss has to prepare for interview night. Cinna dresses her in a dress covered in jewels that make her look like she is being engulfed by flames when she moves. On interview night, Peeta also admits to all of Panem that he loves Katniss. When the Games begin, Katniss follows Haymitch's advice and stays away from the Cornucopia quickly but gets in a small fight with the District 9 boy over a backpack but the boy ends up getting knifed in the back and Katniss ends up running away with the backpack. The Cornucopia is a giant, golden horn shaped like a cone with a curved tail that is filled with all the items that could help the
tributes survive in the Games. Inside the backpack that Katniss got was a sleeping bag, an iodine dropper, water bottle, crackers, beef strips, and night glasses. Over the next few days Katniss moves further and further away from the Cornucopia. She nearly dies of thirst but finds a small pond to drink from. The next morning she is awoken by a wall of Gamemaker-made fire, including fireballs that are flung at her. Katniss survives but suffers minor burns. She goes to sleep but is woken by the sound of the Career pack which are a group of tributes that usually make alliances at the beginning of the game. It usually consists of tributes from district 1 and 2. There Katniss finds out that Peeta joined the Career pack. Katniss is in a tree and the Careers try to climb after her but are too heavy so they settle to wait for her to come down. Rue, a girl that followed Katniss during the training center, points to a tracker jacker nest above Katniss. Tracker jacker venom is deadly and if you don't die from it you suffer horrible hallucinations and sickness. Katniss cuts the branch down and the tracker jackers attack the Careers and kills two of the members of their pack. While cutting the branch down Katniss got stung by some of the tracker jackers and starts to run in the other direction that the Careers run. Katniss remembers that Glimmer had a silver bow, so she goes back to retrieve it. She's about to run away after retrieving it but she starts to experience hallucinations. A delusional Katniss is saved by Peeta when she's unable to coordinate herself to run from Cato, who is quickly approaching. After running away she blacks out from the venom. When Katniss wakes up, she finds she's being watched by Rue so, she proposes an alliance with Rue. She says that Rue reminds her of Prim, in size and demeanor. Katniss and Rue decide to
destroy the Careers' food pile because the Careers have had plenty of food their whole lives and that they would struggle if a direct food supply was taken away from them. When she gets to the Career's camp she discovers that the food is protected by landmines and shoots a sack that spill apples onto the ground that set off all of the bombs and eventually destroy all of their food. Rue was supposed to provide a distraction while Katniss checks out the Career camp and taught her her four note melody so that they will know that both of them are safe. After destroying the food, Katniss hears Rue's melody but suddenly hears her cry out for Katniss.Katniss runs through the trees to find Rue entangled in a mesh net, one arm sticking out before a spear is thrown into her abdomen by the boy from District 1, whose name is later revealed to be Marvel. Katniss kills the boy (with an arrow to the neck) and sits down with Rue, Katniss promises she'll win for the both of them and sings the Valley Song. Rue dies after Katniss finishes the song. Seeing Rue dead and angry that the Capitol enjoys watching innocent children die, Katniss decides to pick flowers and decorates Rue's corpse with them, hiding the wound and weaving them into her hair. When she finishes, Katniss realizes how much it looks like Rue is in fact sleeping and does the signature District 12 farewell gesture to Rue. Later, this is seen as an act that defied the Capi

tol. She then takes her and the dead boy's backpacks, knowing that Rue would want her to have them. Then, the Gamemakers announce that two tributes from the same district can win. She seeks out Peeta and finds him hiding in the mud of a riverbank. She finds out that he's suffering from a severe cut on his leg Cato gave him, tracker jacker stings, and multiple burns and tries the best she can to care for him. A feast is then announced by the Gamemakers near the Cornucopia where Katniss will find the item she needs most; the medicine needed to cure Peeta's blood poisoning. Peeta refuses to let her go but, Katniss tricks him into consuming a mixture of sleep syrup and berries by telling him it's sugar berries and he passes out after eating them. At the feast, Katniss is ambushed by Clove, who taunts her about Rue's death and Peeta's predicament but as she is about to make the first cut she is hurled away from Katniss by Thresh because she "cut up" Rue who was in the same district as Thresh. Thresh lets Katniss escape because of her alliance to Rue and says that he does not wan to owe Katniss anymore and states that they are now even. She flees the feast with her life, and returns to the cave to heal both Peeta and her own wounds.While they are both recovering, they see that Thresh has been presumably killed at the hands of Cato. During one night of rain, Katniss asks Peeta when he started loving her. Peeta tells her it was their first day of school when he heard Katniss sing the Valley Song. After the storm ended, the two went to hunt. When Katniss whistled for Peeta and he did not answer she ran towards him and the two argue for a bit until a cannon fires. Peeta has gathered berries, deadly berries, that he didn't know were poisonous. Katniss expects Peeta to die, but it appears he hasn't eaten any yet. They see Foxface's body being taken away. A few days later, the river is found empty, as well as
the ponds. They figure that the Gamemakers want them to go to the lake.When they make it there they wait a few hours for Cato, the only other remaining tribute, to arrive. They are almost going to give up when he runs screaming towards them. When Katniss sees that he is running away from a pack of wolf mutations, she and Peeta immediately run away with him toward the Cornucopia. Peeta's only a few yards away telling Katniss to go. They reach the Cornucopia and scale it, though one of the mutts manages to injure Peeta. Once at the top of the horn, Cato finally gets back to his senses and strangles Peeta to the edge.Katniss shoots Cato on the back of his hand and he releases Peeta. Cato is later disarmed by the mutts and gnawed at by the wolves, being left to suffer. After some time, Katniss decides to kill him out of pity, not vengeance. It is then announced that the rule of two tributes winning, if from the same district, has been revoked and so she and Peeta must fight to the death. They pitifully realize that the former was just a ruse. Katniss aims her bow at Peeta when she sees he has picked up a weapon, but immediately drops it when he proceeds to throw it into the lake. Feeling guilty, she then takes out some deadly night lock berries and gives a handful to Peeta, and the two of them threaten to commit suicide so there will be no winner. They later discover the Capitol sees this as rebellion. The plan works and both her and Peeta are cro
wned victors of the 74th Hunger Games. After their final interviews and dinner, they go on the train that takes them home. Katniss is confused about her feelings for Peeta and becomes even more confused the closer they get to home. If you enjoy suspense books that keep you turning the pages you should read the Hunger Games. I really liked that Suzanne Collins made the hero/heroine in the story a girl because they are usually guys. I loved the story because it shows us that this can be us in the future when we are bored of reality TV and want more interesting things. Reality TV can actually turn into the Hunger Games and people might actually go to extremes just to entertain someone.
